Great British playwright and national treasure

I gave Emily free range of my To Read shelf, to choose the next blog book. She eschewed the dozen waiting VMCs and alighted, with relief, on Alan Bennett's novella The Uncommon Reader. So that's the next choice and may bring us a bit of cheer ( though never, with him, uncomplicated cheer).
